Assessment Day: our objective is to establish a base-line on which we can assess our future progress quarterly. ~5 minute warm-up under the beautiful full moon followed by 2 short moseys to the pavilion (we decided not do exercise in the snow at the 1st site). 5 simple exercises: Merkins, Squats, Burpees, Sit-ups & Pull-ups. We partnered up & partner 1’s began doing as many Merkins as they could in 2 minutes. Partner 2’s were now up to do the same. Welcomed words of encouragement were heard from the non-exercising partner. Slow Bear morphed into several distinctly different roles (barking drill sergeant, soothing Mom’s voice, etc.) which helped provide comic relief. After each exercise we shared ‘bests’ in the spirit of friendly competition. After repeating the same format for the other exercises we were ready for the 1 mile timed run. Times ranged in the 7+ to 10+ minute range.
Although ‘the thang’ only consisted of 10 minutes of workout (5 X 2 minutes) it was evident this was a different experience than our usual ‘continuous motion’ workouts. The mosey back to the virtual shovel flag was very slow indicating to me that most pax were spent. No reported ‘merlot splashings’ but I believe there were some near misses.
Consensus favorite exercises were Burpee’s & pull-ups: most of us accomplished most or all of the pull-ups in the 1st minute! Back by popular demand in April!
